Replacement VS Repair
- On average, heat pumps last between 10 and 15 years. Age of the unit is the first indicator that it is time to start considering replacement.
- Your electric bill may suddenly go up. If the heat pumps age is in the double digits, it may be less efficient than it once was. The unit may need a repair or it could be time for a replacement.
- If the heat pump is leaking it may be time to replace. Costly refrigeration repairs are not a good investment. If the heat pump is 10+ years it is time to replace it.
- If you are starting to hear strange noises like buzzing, grinding, gurgling, or clanging it may be time to replace.
How Much Does a Heat Pump Cost?
There are several variables that will determine the cost of a heat pump installation. Below are like for like replacement costs, for a heat pump only, on average. It is necessary for us to perform a free in home estimate to give an exact estimate on site.
- First, the new heat pump must be compatible with the rest of your system. It is not recommended that you start to mix and match equipment. The new unit won’t give you the right performance, or efficiency if you do. A full system replacement may be necessary.
- The installation process is not as simple as disconnecting some wires from your old unit, then putting a new one in its place. If your new heat pump is compatible with your furnace, it will take on average 6 hours to replace.
- For a single stage/speed, 2 ton to 4 ton heat pump with a matching indoor coil, and copper lines to reconnect the equipment, a like-for-like replacement will start at $8,000 to $12,000.
- A 5 ton system will require a full system replacement starting at $16,000
- During our free in home estimate, you can expect our comfort consultant to determine the correct tonage needed, inform and educate you on the equipment that will best fit your needs, and perform properly in your home.
